Free agent guard Nick Smith Jr. signed a two-way contract with the Los Angeles Lakers. Smith had been waived by the Charlotte Hornets last week.
Smith fills the Lakers third two-way spot going into the season. In 60 games for the Hornets last season, the 6-foot-2 guard averaged 9.8 points, 2.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists. Smith shot 39% from the field, including 34% on 5.1 three-point attempts per game.
Charlotte waived Smith after two years on his rookie scale contract. The Hornets were facing a logjam of perimeter players after drafting Kon Knueppel, Liam McNeeley and Sion James, acquiring Collin Sexton, re-signing Tre Mann and signing Spencer Dinwiddie.
