First Take stars Stephen A. Smith and Molly Qerim have had some disagreements on the show in the past, but today’s confrontation between the two was just a tad more heated than usual.
During today’s show, Smith gave a report where he indicated that the Los Angeles Lakers believe that UConn head coach Dan Hurley spurned the team’s head coaching offer at the behest of his wife.
“Allow me to tell you what sources in L.A. told me,” Smith said, via Awful Announcing. “They thought they had a deal with Danny Hurley. They thought that he had flown out to L.A. and just like Kendrick Perkins and others said, ‘Don’t let him out of the building,’ they had every intention of Danny Hurley signing on with them and being the coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. And whether it’s true or not, I can assure you there are people within the Lakers organization who believe that Mrs. Hurley made that decision.”
Qerim took exception to that, admonishing Smith for putting the blame on Mrs. Hurley. But Smith pushed back, after which Qerim said she doesn’t believe the report is accurate.
“That’s not fair,” Qerim said. “That’s not fair, don’t put that on her.”
“That’s not a bad thing!” Smith replied. “How’s that not fair?”
“I just don’t think that’s factual,” Qerim answered.
“We listen to a plethora of people who are happily married talk about how profoundly important their spouses’ feelings are,” Smith added. “That’s all.”
Qerim once more accused Smith’s report of being false, but Smith declared that the Lakers believe it’s true.
