While he may not have executive power with the organization, Magic Johnson’s opinions can sometimes mean a lot to the higher-ups in the Los Angeles Lakers. And with the team searching for their next head coach, he could be a difference-maker.
So who does the NBA legend want the Lakers to hire as their new coach? Over the past 24 hours, he’s made it pretty clear: UConn head coach Dan Hurley.
Yesterday Magic took to X and spoke glowingly of Hurley after learning that he had spoken to the owner and GM about the position.
“I heard the great news that Lakers Owner Jeanie Buss and GM/VP of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka have had conversations with back-to-back NCAA champion and current UCONN Head Coach, Dan Hurley, about becoming the next Lakers Head Coach! I’m so excited and thrilled! This would be a game changer for the Lakers organization, LeBron, AD, the rest of the Laker players, Laker Nation and the NBA! Coach Hurley can coach his butt off lol,” Magic wrote.
Magic followed that up with an appearance on The Jimmy Kimmel Show where he reiterated
“I want the coach to be Hurley. If we sign him I think it works for both. It works for Coach Hurley… He’s great with offense and defensive strategy, and he’s tough…” Magic said.
Will Magic Johnson get his wish?
