Luka Doncic‘s move to Hollywood may ultimately do wonders for his brand but it’s definitely going to cost him.
With last night’s surprising trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, Luka is now reportedly ineligible for a supermax extension this summer which would’ve paid him five years, $345 million — the largest sum in NBA history.
Instead because the Mavericks were reportedly unwilling to commit to their 25-year-old superstar because of “constant conditioning issues,” the biggest contract he can receive in LA is five years, $229 million. Meaning Luka will miss out on an additional $116 million he could’ve pocketed by remaining in Dallas.
If the Mavs didn’t particularly care for their five-time All-Star this was a great way to show it.
Despite carrying the franchise in it’s post-Dirk years, Dallas decided that it no longer needed one of the best players to enter the NBA in a long time.
Fans couldn’t believe it on social media.
“Not only did they trade Luka Doncic without telling him. This made him lose 116 million dollars. NO WONDER HE DOESNT WANNA ANSWER YOUR CALL NICO!!” a user said.
“He needs to physically assault Nico Harrison,” another commented.
“Remember this when you goofy mfers start clutching pearls on here about players not being loyal to billionaire owners and honoring their contracts,” a fan replied. “bro just took them to the finals and they repaid him by calling him a fatass and stealing $100M from him.”
“And this doesn’t even account for NO STATE TAX in Texas,” another person pointed out. “This is unforgivable if you’re Luka Doncic.”
Doncic has been out of action since the left calf strain he suffered on Christmas Day but he had been doing his usual Luka magic prior to going down.
Saturday night marked the first time two reigning All-NBA players had been traded for midseason.
