LeBron James has opted out of his contract for the 2024-25 season, but don’t let that fool you, he’s not going anywhere.
It’s been heavily reported this Saturday that James will sign a new deal with the Los Angeles Lakers. He could, in theory, sign a three-year, $162 million max contract.
Although there’s $162 million on the table for James, he’s apparently willing to take a pay cut so the Lakers can use their mid-level exception.
James’ agent, Rich Paul of Klutch Sports, spoke to ESPN about his client’s mindset heading into free agency.
“He is prioritizing a roster improvement,” Paul told ESPN. “He’s been adamant about exuding all efforts to improve the roster.”
According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, the Lakers will need to find an impact player in order for James to accept less money. If they can’t do that, he’ll just take the max contract.
“If LA cannot find an impact player to sign for the full MLE that would be created by James taking a paycut, James will seek the max,” McMenamin said. “There can only be so much patience on James’ part: Team USA camp begins a week from today in Las Vegas and he needs a deal before taking the court.”
The pressure is on Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka. He’s got to find a player who can fit alongside James, regardless if it’s a guard, forward or center.
