The 2023-24 season wasn’t exactly a banner year for LeBron James. But he’s re-upped with the Los Angeles Lakers on a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2025-26 season. Will that 2026 end date mark the end of his historic career?
In a recent interview with ESPN‘s Dave McMenamin, LeBron acknowledged that it certainly could be. He said that while he wouldn’t say yes or no definitively, he can envision it happening.
“I mean, it could be,” LeBron said. “I’d never sit up here and say, ‘Oh, uhh, maybe not,’ but, yeah, it could be, easily. But we’ll see what happens.”

LeBron is heading into his 22nd NBA season and is poised to tie Vince Carter for the most seasons played in NBA history. If he makes it to a 23rd season and can play 120 games over these next two years, he can also break the record for most seasons and games played over a career.
But more tellingly, he’s getting to play with his son Bronny James now. That alone might give him the mental energy to keep playing until his body physically can’t go anymore.
And from what we’ve seen, LeBron still isn’t close to not being able to play.
