The Los Angeles Lakers have explored breaking up either their 2031 or 2032 first round pick in exchange for multiple first round picks, sources tell ESPN. The Lakers would potentially have more optionality by having multiple first round picks of lesser value than one beyond the expiring contracts of Rui Hachimura, Gabe Vincent and Maxi Kleber.
The Lakers’ most glaring need is on defense around their offensive-minded trio of Luka Doncic, LeBron James and Austin Reaves.
Last season, the Phoenix Suns traded their 2031 unprotected first round pick to the Utah Jazz for three first round picks (the least favorable originating with the Jazz, Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves).
The Lakers’ first round pick in either 2031 or 2032 is considered their most premium tradeable asset. The Lakers can trade two picks of their own this offseason plus up to three swaps as opposed to just one future pick and four swaps at the trade deadline.
