Jonathan Kuminga Demands Trade: What It Means for the Warriors

January 16, 2026 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Jonathan Kuminga has demanded a trade, forcing the Warriors into a win-now decision as Stephen Curry’s window continues to narrow.
This trade request formalizes months of uncertainty around Kuminga’s role at Golden State. What comes as little surprise is the timing, with the 23-year-old forward reportedly requesting a trade from the Warriors on the first day he became eligible to be dealt. He signed a two-year, $48.5 million extension in the offseason and was once projected as the future face of the franchise. Since then, the Warriors’ focus has shifted toward prioritizing immediate production over long-term development.

Jonathan Kuminga Demands Trade: What It Means for the Warriors

Kuminga Demands a Trade

With Kuminga starting just 13 games for the Warriors this season and struggling to find consistent footing in the rotation, the outcome was always predictable. ESPN’s Shams Charania reported the demand Thursday, confirming what had been building behind the scenes throughout the season.

Averaging just 11.8 points before his demotion, Kuminga’s fluctuating role made it difficult to establish rhythm in Steve Kerr’s system. In a setup built around Curry, experience, and immediate results, the gap between Kuminga’s development timeline and the Warriors’ win-now approach only widened.

Why the Fit Has Broken Down

Kuminga is undeniably talented, but it simply didn’t work out in the Bay. The fifth-year forward was once projected to be the team’s future cornerstone, with hopes of building around him in the same way they did with Curry over the last decade. After a hot run of form, he was even promised a secure starting spot. However, Kerr hasn’t even allowed the former NBA champion to play a single minute in the last 13 games.
Yesterday, Kerr told 95.7 The Game:
“It’s always difficult trying to grow young players while competing at the highest level. We have to find the right balance, and sometimes that’s easier said than done.”
With a 22-19 record, the Warriors understand that patience isn’t an option anymore. Kerr and the Dubs are under pressure to remain competitive. This urgency, unfortunately, comes at the expense of players like Kuminga and their predicted futures. It hurts to see a $22.5 million player sitting on the bench, but tough decisions are necessary to keep the team in the championship picture.

What Comes Next for the Warriors

Kuminga’s frustration at leaving a team that once promised him everything is completely understandable. But with the Warriors sitting eighth in the West, the focus is firmly on the here and now. Golden State has until the February 5 trade deadline to finalize a deal, and even though teams are showing interest, nothing has changed.

What’s next for the Warriors depends on who they can acquire in a potential Kuminga trade. If Golden State lands a player that maximizes a 37-year-old Curry’s value, while also supporting the roster moving forward, then all the drama was worth it.
