Newly-minted Los Angeles Lakers head coach J.J. Redick has some tough work ahead of him in bringing the team back to the top of the NBA. But one of the more enjoyable parts of the job seems to be the chance to work with some players he really likes.
Speaking to the Lakers official website, Redick said that he “can’t wait” to coach star guard Austin Reaves. He said that Reaves’ “competitive spirit” and “mental toughness” are some of the things he likes most about him.
“Oh he’s excellent and I cannot wait to coach Austin. And one of the reasons I can’t wait to coach him is because of his competitive spirit. He has a real mental toughness and competitive approach every single night,” Redick said.
Reaves may only be a backup but he’s a fan favorite at the Staples Center. The 2023-24 season was his best yet as he played every regular season and postseason game for the team, averaging career-highs in points per game.
Fans believe this means in no uncertain terms that Reaves will be staying with the team in spite of trade speculation:
“You can take Austin out of your trade machine deals now,” one user declared.
“Reaves 20 ppg season will feed families,” wrote another.
“Reaves propaganda back on my TL. Life is good,” a third wrote.
Will Reaves have a breakout season under Redick?
