Jeanie Buss responded to reports about tensions with LeBron James following an ESPN story detailing the Lakers’ $10 billion sale to Mark Walter’s ownership group. The former owner, now team governor, told The Athletic’s Sam Amick it was unfair to involve her star player in family disputes.
“It’s really not right, given all the great things LeBron has done for the Lakers, that he has to be pulled into my family drama,” Buss said. “To say that it wasn’t appreciated is just not true and completely unfair to him.”
The ESPN report outlined frustrations Buss held regarding James’ ego and the influence of Klutch Sports within the organization. The agency represents both James and previously represented Anthony Davis, who was traded to Dallas for Luka Doncic in February 2025.
The relationship between James and Lakers leadership has been strained in recent years. A 2022 meeting between all parties attempted to resolve ongoing tensions. James’ public criticism of the franchise’s roster decisions has reportedly been a persistent source of irritation for Buss.
Following the sale’s completion, Buss retained her governor title for at least five seasons. She subsequently fired several family members from front office positions, including brothers Joey, Jesse, Jim and Johnny, plus sister Janie.
The Lakers have struggled since their 2020 championship, ranking 13th in win percentage. They entered Wednesday with the NBA’s sixth-best record but ranked 17th in net rating at minus-0.4.
James, 41, is playing his 23rd NBA season on a $52.6 million player option. He has not addressed his long-term future with the franchise.
