The Los Angeles Lakers have worked out contract details with their 2024 second-round pick, Bronny James.
According to NBA insider Shams Charania, James has agreed to a four-year rookie contract worth $7.9 million. The deal includes a team option in the fourth season.
James was taken with the 55th overall pick in the second round last Thursday. Los Angeles had previously taken Tennessee wing Dalton Knecht with the No. 17 pick in Wednesday night’s first round.
ESPN’s Bobby Marks broke down some of the structure of the deal on X/Twitter this morning.
“The Bronny James contract is the standard second round pick exception: $1,157,143, $1,955,377, $2,296,271, $2,486,995 (team),” Marks wrote. “It’s the same length in years that three picks in the 50’s signed for last year. The second round pick exception does not apply against the cap until July 31.”
Bronny’s agent Rich Paul, who also represents his father and now teammate LeBron James, had previously made it clear his client would not be signing a two-way deal.
“Yes, that’s absolutely true. Teams know that. I’m not doing that,” Paul said when asked about the two-way deal rumor.
While some have complained about the nepotism involved in the Lakers taking Bronny, head coach JJ Redick attempted to squash that at Tuesday’s press conference.
“With Bronny, I want to clarify one thing you just said, which is [general manager] Rob [Pelink] and I did not give Bronny anything,” Redick said. “Bronny has earned this.”
