The top story out of last night’s Los Angeles Lakers season opener was Bronny James making his NBA debut and, along with his father, becoming the first father-son duo to appear in a regular season game.
Bronny and LeBron checked into the game together in the second quarter, with the former playing three minutes, taking two shots and missing both and pulling down one rebound. It was his only action in the Lakers’ 110-103 win over the Minnesota Timberwolves, last season’s runner-up in the Western Conference.
On “The Herd” Wednesday, Colin Cowherd acknowledged the significance of the night for the James family, but argued that it isn’t that big of a deal for the Lakers as a whole.
“It was cool. It was a moment, First father and son duo, it was great. I get it. It was a moment. It will have zero impact on the Lakers. In fact, if J.J. Redick is forced to play Bronny, it will hurt the team,” Cowherd said.
Cowherd went on to say that he was most concerned with how LA played, praising Redick, the team’s first-year head coach, for the way his team looked offensively and his ability to utilized star big man Anthony Davis better than his predecessor Darvin Ham.
“The other stuff felt like a soft-launch for a Kardashian show,” Cowherd said.
Cowherd is a massive LeBron fan, so he didn’t mean this as an insult to him or his son, but he’s also not wrong that the Bronny moment, while cool, is fleeting.
Moving forward, it will be all business for the Lakers, starting with Friday night’s game against the Phoenix Suns.
