Bronny James notched the first two points of his NBA career on Wednesday night.
LeBron James’ homecoming didn’t go well for his Los Angeles Lakers, who fell 134-110 to the Cleveland Cavaliers. But with the game out of hand late in the fourth quarter, Cavs fans implored Lakers head coach JJ Redick to play the Ohio icon’s son. In five minutes off the bench, Bronny tallied two assists and a steal while making a mid-range jumper for his first NBA bucket.
Per Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor, Bronny called the moment “a dream come true.”
“I was still in game mode when I hit the shot, so I didn’t really acknowledge it while I was playing,” Bronny said after the game. “But yeah, it felt good after.”
Cavs fans gave Bronny a thunderous ovation when he entered the game and erupted when the 20-year-old made a shot. Bronny wasn’t expecting such a warm welcome at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.
“Much more than I anticipated for sure. But it’s all love,” Bronny said, per ESPN’s Dave McMenamin. “It was insane. It was a nice moment. The chants really got me. I was straight-faced, but I felt it and it felt really good, especially coming from here. Yeah, it was a special moment for me for sure.”
Bronny said he’d imagined scoring in the NBA “pretty much since I picked the ball up.”
Last week, Bronny and LeBron made NBA history by becoming the first father and son to play together. The league’s all-time scoring leader watched his son’s second appearance from the bench after collecting 26 points in 29 minutes.
“To see him get his first NBA basket in this arena where he grew up not too far away from here, it’s an unbelievable moment,” LeBron said, per McMenamin. “An unbelievable moment for him, first of all. For our family. It’s just pretty cool to be a part of it.”
