Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese put the work in last summer, sharpening her scoring touch and improving her playmaking to become more than just a rebounding machine. As a result, she’s still a walking double-double but one who has improved significantly upon her rookie numbers. Unexpectedly, Reese’s vast improvement hasn’t been mirrored by the Sky.
Angel Reese’s Future With Chicago Sky In Doubt
Reese has shined bright in the WNBA, quickly emerging as a key part of the Sky’s future.

However, the 23-year-old is outspoken, and she doesn’t hide her frustrations with the franchise’s losing ways. In fact, she implored Chicago to improve their roster in a recent interview, saying she “might have to move in a different direction” if the team doesn’t improve its outlook. She later walked back those comments after Wednesday’s win over Connecticut Sun and apologized to the team.
It was too little, too late. Following comments deemed ‘detrimental to the team,’ the Sky suspended Reese for the first half of Sunday’s game against Las Vegas Aces. Unsurprisingly, neither her suspension nor apology ended the conversation. This despite Chicago insisting they were “moving forward as a team” (h/t ESPN reporter Alexa Philippou).
‘Worst-Run Organization In The League’
Instead, it opened the door for more public criticism of the Sky’s leadership. Several analysts and reporters have called out the team’s management, highlighting poor drafting, a lack of investment in practice facilities, high staff turnover, and missed chances to attract top free agents. The most notable condemnation came from one of the WNBA’s higher-ups:
“She needs to get the **** out of there,” a WNBA executive tells DallasHoopsJournal reporter Ashish Mathur. “Chicago is probably the worst-run organization in the league. You’re gonna suspend your best player just because she’s putting pressure on you to get better? That was embarrassing to see. I think Chicago will try to trade her this offseason, but if they don’t, she should request a trade.”
The Last Word On Angel Reese’s Sky Future
Reese was the seventh overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft.
In 2025, she’s averaging 14.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.5 steals, 0.7 blocks, 3.9 turnovers and 3.4 personal fouls per game. So far as her shooting splits, she’s converted 45.8 percent of her field goal attempts, 18.2 percent of his 3-point attempts, and 75.6 percent of her free-throw attempts. Yet, Chicago is only 21-43 when Reese plays.
With that in mind, she signed a four-year contract worth $324,383 with the Sky in 2024. She’ll earn $82,399 next season, while the team holds a $93,636 club option for 2027 if she stays. Losing a player of her caliber would be a major blow for Chicago, but the current situation puts her future with the team in doubt.
If Reese no longer trusts the team’s vision, and if the team’s management feels challenged by her remarks, a trade could become the best option for both parties. Of course, several teams would likely be eager to add her as a cornerstone. Not only is she a special talent, she’s playing for the right reasons. Making it clear that she wants to compete for championships, not just fill seats, is an endearing quality.
There remains the possibility that Reese stays with the Sky if fences are mended and the organization has a clear plan to improve. However, her exit could be the headline move of the winter if not.
