3-Point Savant Who Played For Rockets Last Year, Garnering Lot of Attention On Open Market

August 4, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

Unrestricted free agent Jack McVeigh wants to remain in the NBA after spending last season with the Houston Rockets. According to ESPN’s Olgun Uluc, McVeigh is actively pursuing options that will keep him in the NBA.

“It’s worth noting that McVeigh has ambitions to return to the NBA, which he’s still actively pursuing,” Uluc tweeted. “He’s also still fielding – and, I’m told, legitimately considering – offers from high-level European teams.”

Athletic Australian Free Agent Looking For Another Shot After Spending Last Year With Rockets

McVeigh, who went undrafted in 2019, joined Houston on a two-way contract as a free agent last season. McVeigh spent most of the season with the Rockets’ G-League affiliate, Rio Grande Valley Vipers, though he did see sparse action in nine appearances with the Rockets. Prior to joining the Rockets, the 29-year-old Australian spent five years playing professional basketball after not being drafted in the 2019 NBA draft. He also spent three seasons playing college basketball at Nebraska.

McVeigh didn’t have a great first G-League campaign. The athletic 6-8 forward did show some scoring ability and was a high-volume 3-point shooter. Nearly 55% of his shot attempts were from deep.  However, he struggled with shooting the ball and with his ball-handling at times.

McVeigh had 26 double-figure scoring games in 37 regular-season games with the Vipers, topping the 20-point plateau 13 times. McVeigh’s best game was late in the season when he exploded for 33 points, on 11 of 20 shooting from the field and 8 of 16 from deep, against the Iowa Wolves. He also grabbed three rebounds, doled out a pair of assists, and blocked two shots.

McVeigh finished the campaign with the Vipers, averaging 15.7 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.5 assists in 30 minutes. He drained the 3.1 threes a game with shooting splits of 42.6/35.5/88.2.

McVeigh had an outstanding 2025 Las Vegas summer league session with the Rockets, shooting the ball. But McVeigh didn’t provide much else.  He scored 20 points in two of his four Vegas appearances, averaging 14.0 points, 2.5 rebounds, and one assist with shooting splits of 58.8/45.5/1.000.

McVeigh asked for and was granted his release from Aussie NBL club Tasmanian JackJumpers, the Pulse Tasmania reported yesterday. This transaction allows McVeigh not only to pursue NBA opportunities but also to explore opportunities in Europe and other clubs in the NBL.

“We left no stone unturned trying to bring Jack back to Tassie, but ultimately this is Jack’s decision and we now need to respect that,” the JackJumpers’ Darren Smith told the Pulse Tasmania.

McVeigh is not ready for a full-time NBA role, though his shooting prowess should intrigue teams to give him another two-way shot. 13 NBA teams officially have at least one spot available on their 15-man roster, though not every squad will carry a full team on opening night.

Golden State, New York, Detroit, Atlanta, Minnesota, and Cleveland are the teams that must add a player on a standard deal. Meanwhile, 12 teams have at least one open two-way spot available. Philadelphia, Toronto, Los Angeles Clippers, Phoenix, Sacramento, Chicago, Detroit, Indiana, Milwaukee, Houston, New Orleans, Atlanta, Charlotte, Miami, Washington, Denver, Minnesota, and Utah are teams that have already filled their two-way spots.

McVeigh may find a better opportunity overseas. While it is unknown which European teams are potentially interested in McVeigh, Uluc added that NBL clubs, the Cairns Taipans and Illawara Hawks, are two teams pursuing him the strongest.
