The Memphis Grizzlies currently sit in second place in the Western Conference with a 36-18 record. They hold a half-game lead over the third-seeded Denver Nuggets. However, they trail the Oklahoma City Thunder by eight games. The Thunder are tied with the Cleveland Cavaliers for the best record in the NBA. They remain the benchmark for the Western Conference this season.
Despite injuries continuing to be a theme from last season, the Grizzlies have managed to maintain a high standing due to the depth and balance of their roster. Even with key players like Ja Morant missing 22 of their 54 games this season, Memphis has stayed competitive. The team’s front office has done an excellent job building a well-rounded roster, allowing them to remain in contention for a deep playoff run.

Injury Report: Positive Outlook for Memphis
The good news for the Grizzlies and their fan base is that they are in a favorable position regarding injuries. Ja Morant and Vince Williams plan to return after the All-Star break. Newly acquired forward Marvin Bagley remains day-to-day with an ankle injury that has kept him out since December.
Taylor Jenkins Utilizing Team Depth
Head coach Taylor Jenkins has effectively utilized the team’s depth, often rotating different players into the lineup due to injuries and strategic matchups. This approach has helped the Grizzlies stay competitive in the Western Conference, though as the playoffs approach, the rotation is expected to narrow. If Memphis can maintain good health, Jenkins will likely begin tightening his lineup to prepare for postseason competition.
The Challenge of Catching Oklahoma City
Memphis finds itself in an interesting position: the team possesses enough depth and talent to be a legitimate championship contender but still lags behind the Thunder. Oklahoma City has not only built an impressive roster but has also developed stronger cohesion over the past few seasons. A major factor in the Thunder’s dominance is the exceptional play of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is a frontrunner for the NBA MVP award this season.
Gilgeous-Alexander has been nothing short of sensational. He has led Oklahoma City to an eight-game lead over any other team in the Western Conference. While the Grizzlies have comparable talent, they have lacked consistency. OKC has received dominant performances from its star player, while Memphis has not. The Grizzlies’ success will largely depend on whether Morant can return to elite form. He must match the impact that Gilgeous-Alexander provides for the Thunder.
The Best Is Yet to Come from Ja Morant
Ja Morant has had a relatively down season by his standards. Having missed a significant portion of the schedule, his numbers across the board have declined compared to the 2022-23 campaign. Morant is averaging nearly seven points fewer per game, with decreases in his field goal percentage, rebounds, and assists.
Much of this can be attributed to his extended absence due to last season’s suspension and subsequent shoulder injury. As he continues to regain his rhythm, it’s expected that Morant will return to the dynamic, high-flying player who can take over games. His ability to attack the rim and perform in clutch moments is crucial for Memphis’ success. If Morant returns to his peak form, the Grizzlies will have a much better chance of competing with the NBA’s elite teams. This includes the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Boston Celtics.
For the Grizzlies to seriously contend for a championship, Morant must rediscover his dominance from the 2021-23 seasons, before his off-court distractions disrupted his trajectory. His resurgence would significantly impact Memphis’ ability to make a deep postseason run and challenge the league’s top teams.
Grizzlies Have the Potential to Challenge the League’s Elite
If Memphis stays healthy and improves their on-court chemistry, they can push the top championship contenders. The Grizzlies’ depth helps them match up well against any team. Their core trio of Ja Morant, Jaren Jackson Jr., and Desmond Bane is as formidable as any in the league.
With the right mix of health, cohesion, and elite performances, the Grizzlies can become one of the NBA’s most dangerous teams ahead of the playoffs. As the postseason nears, Memphis will aim to take the next step. They will look to challenge the best teams for a shot at the championship.
