Kevin Durant’s Preferred Trade Destination Revealed

June 11, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

The Phoenix Suns tried to trade Kevin Durant at the 2025 trade deadline. However, they didn’t inform him of their decision, and the star forward took notice. After missing the playoffs completely, the Suns need a different route, and it all points to Durant being traded. And it seems like the former Finals MVP has a preferred destination, the San Antonio Spurs.

Kevin Durant’s Preferred Trade Destination Revealed

According to the latest reports, Durant prefers the Spurs as his next team. Looking at the NBA landscape, KD has picked an ideal situation. The Spurs have generational talent and plenty of depth, and all they need is someone who can carry the team in close games. That is where Durant shines. All that remains is for the Spurs and Suns to find a common ground where both teams get what they want.

Should the Spurs Trade for Kevin Durant?

The Spurs dealt with plenty of injuries this year, and one can say that was the reason they missed the playoffs. Their generational talent, Victor Wembanyama, suffered blood clots. Former head coach Gregg Popovich suffered a stroke and eventually retired. Before Wemby went down, they were 23-29. Up until January, they were playing .500 basketball and were 18-16 on January 3rd.

All signs point to Victor coming back healthy next season, and he will enter his third year. Last season, he made the All-Star team for the first time in his career. With Wemby, De’Aaron Fox, and rookie of the year Stephon Castle, the Spurs have plenty of weapons. Adding a scorer like KD will do wonders for their team. Durant is one of the greatest scorers in NBA history, with a career average of 27.2 points on 50% shooting from the floor. He won two championships and two Finals MVPs with the Golden State Warriors. However, he hasn’t been past the second round since 2019.

The Spurs are also in the rumors for Giannis Antetokounmpo. However, there are no signs yet that the Greek Freak is going anywhere. On the other hand, KD’s name has been in the rumor mill for a while.

What Can the Spurs Offer?

The San Antonio Spurs are among the teams with the most assets to offer in a potential trade. In this year’s draft, they have the second overall pick and the 14th overall pick. It is hard to see them trading the second-overall pick for KD. However, the 14th pick is still in the lottery and holds value. They also have swap rights in 2026 with Atlanta, the Hawks’ first-round unprotected in 2027, and swap rights with Boston in 2028.

The bigger challenge for the Spurs is finding salary among players that the Suns will want to take back. Durant will make $54 million next season. The good news is that the Spurs are under the cap, and can take back more salary than they send. Their three high-salary tradeable players include Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Harrison Barnes. If they get KD, their offense should be improved next season. Last year, they finished with the 19th-best offensive rating in the league. Ultimately, from all sides, a Durant-Spurs trade is logical.
