In chasing global reach, the NBA might lose its local soul. With the latest venture into European games, the league is making a crucial mistake. The Orlando Magic and Memphis Grizzlies are scheduled to play in Berlin and London in January 2026. But that means one thing: no game in Memphis on Martin Luther King Day.
International Play Spoils Memphis Grizzlies Annual MLK Day Game
MLK Day is one of the marquee matchups in the NBA, just like Christmas games. The Grizzlies have made the game a significant event in the city. It’s often nationally televised and a focal point for community engagement.
Beyond the game, the Grizzlies participate in community service initiatives, including partnerships with local organizations. The city of Memphis, along with the Grizzlies, uses the day to honor Dr. Martin Luther King’s fight for equality and justice. There are always events and tributes that highlight his impact on the city and the nation.

Why Do the Grizzlies Always Host NBA Games on MLK Day?
On April 4th, 1968, Dr. King was assassinated in Memphis at the Lorraine Motel, which has since become the site of the National Civil Rights Museum. He went to Memphis in March 1968 to support the black sanitation workers, who had been on strike for 17 days.
The Grizzlies made their first appearance on MLK DAY in 2003 after relocating from Vancouver to Memphis. Since coming to the city of Memphis, they have played in every MLK game except for 2002 and 2017. During the 2017-18 season, they celebrated the 50th anniversary of MLK Day, wearing uniforms inspired by the Sanitation Strike.
Grizzlies’ Record On MLK Day
The Grizzlies hold a poor record on MLK Day, as the team has gone 7-15 during the marquee matchup. But they are 4-1 since 2019, including winning four consecutive games.
Ja Morant, their franchise player, has made it a habit to give back to the community on this day. During MLK Day celebrations, he participates in days of service. We have to note, however, that last year, he was under pressure after posting a photoshopped image of King, which caused some social media controversy.
The NBA is Looking for Global Reach
The NBA wants to put their young and electric stars in Europe to expand their reach. Morant is one of the most entertaining players in the league. With his dunks and highlights, the guard is a must-see player. While there is nothing wrong with having the Grizzlies play in Europe, the NBA might have messed up the schedule this time. MLK Day is celebrated on January 19th in 2026, making it impossible for the Grizzlies to play at home on that date.
