Cam Thomas‘ return to the Nets roster is highly anticipated after he missed multiple weeks due to a strained left hamstring. This comeback could significantly influence the team’s prospects for the playoffs and their position in the upcoming draft.
Cam Thomas’ Return Is Crucial For the Nets
Thomas is scheduled to rejoin the Nets rotation this evening when they play against the Portland Trail Blazers. He last appeared in a game on January 2 and has only played two games since November 25 due to a left hamstring injury.
Thomas is earning a salary of $4,041,249 for this season and will become a restricted free agent in the summer. Before his injury, he led the Nets in scoring averaging 24.7 points per game in 19 outings. Thomas also has averages of 3.4 assists and 3.6 rebounds while 44.8% shooting from the field, and 37.5% shooting from three-point range.
During his first few years in the league, Kyrie Irving mentored Thomas. He advised him on handling pressure in late games and becoming an advanced scorer during close matches. Irving, considered one of the greatest ball-handlers in the league, recently praised Thomas and center Nic Claxton during a post-game interview at Barclays Center.
“I love those guys, and it’s gonna continue, but I really just care about their development”, said Irving. “While I was here, I really had their ear and really sat them down a few times to prepare for what’s coming. I know they have the potential to be great players in this league. They just gotta be consistent and find that continuity and be patient.”
Playoffs or Lottery
When the season began, the Nets were not considered contenders and were expected to tank to get a better lottery pick in the upcoming draft. However, they currently have a 21-37 record and are the 11th seed in the Eastern Conference. Moreover, they are only 1.5 games out of the 10th-place slot, putting the franchise in the playoff hunt.
This year’s draft class includes elite college hoopers like Cooper Flagg, Dylan Harper, and Ace Bailey. However, recent wins have upset Nets fans, who fear that playoff success will hurt their draft position. Despite this concern, the Nets’ Cam Johnson has made it clear that he and the other players want to win.
Cam Thomas’ Return
Cam Thomas’ return brings his skills and competitive mentality. Additionally, the Nets have missed his offensive strength. Forward Trendon Watford is confident that Thomas’ return will end the team’s offensive struggles.
In an interview with the New York Post’s Brian Lewis, Watford said, “We all know exactly what Cam Thomas is going to do when he gets back out there. I think all our offensive struggles will come to an end as soon as he steps foot out there.” Watford continued, “The way he can score, it’s different. He can get to the line, manipulate the defense, he’s definitely one of the best scorers in the league. … We know what CT does. CT gets to it.”
Moving Forward
The Nets have two months to decide whether to continue competing for a playoff spot or follow the fans’ call for tanking. Despite rumors of trades at the past deadline, Sean Marks’ strategy suggests the team is here to compete. This approach seems to be working, and the team still holds 31 draft picks for future years.
Thomas’ future with the Nets is uncertain after the season. His game is valuable, and there is no doubt other teams will try to sign him. His return tonight will provide some relief to his team. If the Nets make it to the playoffs, Thomas will definitely be needed.
