Bub Carrington has had what can be described as a bittersweet start to his NBA career. On one hand, Carrington and fellow Wizards’ draftees Kyshawn George and Alex Sarr are all in prime positions to take significant steps forward in their first NBA offseason. Conversely, the Wizards season has been a long stretch of losing and blowouts. The night Carrington broke the rookie record for most threes in a season was no different.
Bub Carrington Breaks Rookie Franchise Record
Coming off a win against the injury-ridden 76ers, Carrington needed just two threes to tie the record set by teammate Corey Kispert (112) in the 2021-22 season headed into a game against the Pacers at home. While Carrington did break the record and ended the night shooting 3-6 from deep and 5-12 overall, his record was overshadowed. The Pacers scored their franchise record of 162 points and dominated the Wizards. Carrington has now hit 113 threes this season, however, he might not have the record by the end of the season.
Rookies Battling for Record
Carrington may have broken the record, but there is another player on the squad who is not far behind him. George has hit 107 threes this season, making him third on the franchise rookie record list. George also broke a franchise rookie record earlier this month. He passed Bradley Beal as the fastest rookie to hit 100 threes. Now, he is only six threes behind Carrington headed into April.
With George being out with an ankle injury for at least their next game against the Nets, Carrington can add a little to his lead. Both could work on their overall shooting splits, as both shoot under 40% from the field and less than 33% from beyond the arc. However, as rookies, it’s expected they will both take considerable jumps heading into next season and beyond. Sarr could add a little more to the trio’s league-wide record as well, currently fourth on the rookie list sitting at 96.
Carrington’s Overall Season
Carrington hasn’t had a good or bad rookie season, quite literally in the middle of the road. He’s averaging 9.1 points, 4.1 rebounds and 4.2 assists. He’s not shooting the ball as well as other rookies, at 39.5% from the field and 32.8% from three-point range, but all rookies need to improve on something. He’ll continue to get touches and possibly an extra few minutes, with injuries and to help improve the tank odds.
While he’s not in the Rookie of the Year race, there will be strong optimism heading into the offseason that Carrington will come out next season and be more consistent. Defensively, he’s averaging 0.7 steals and almost all of his rebounds come from that end of the floor. His defensive rating is sitting at 118.4 the year. He’ll need to improve on that end of the floor if the Wizards want to beat their win total from this season.
The Last Word on Bub Carrington
Carrington breaking the record is another step in the right direction for the Wizards. Carrington should be extremely proud of this accomplishment. It’s a sign of forward progress and a brief shimmer of hope looking into the future. With the almost certain addition of a top-five pick, the Wizards will continue to add to their young core. That can help spearhead a turnaround for the franchise in the next few seasons.
