Young Dodgers Reliever Will Miss the Start of the Season

March 5, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Dodgers reliever Edgardo Henriquez will miss time to start the season. He was seen in a walking boot on Tuesday.

Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed reliever Edgardo Henriquez will miss the start of the season, reports Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. The young hurler was seen in the clubhouse wearing a walking boot. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts declined to elaborate further. Henriquez’s fastball has been clocked as high as 104 miles per hour. The young gun had a rapid rise through the Los Angeles minor league system after missing all of 2023 due to Tommy John surgery.

Edgardo Henriquez was in a walking boot today in the clubhouse. He won’t be ready to start the season, Dave Roberts said, but Roberts didn’t want to get into what happened right now.

Dodgers Reliever Edgardo Henriquez to Miss Start of Season

A Cup of Coffee

The reliever apparently has one of the most electric repertoires in the Los Angeles organization. The Dodgers called him up for the last week of the regular season in 2024. The Dodgers needed a fresh arm to cover a few innings in a weary bullpen. As a result, the right-hander got some major league experience, making a few relief appearances with decent results. In 3 1/3 innings, Henriquez had a 2.70 ERA with five strikeouts and one save.

Dress Rehearsal

Spring training has been less successful this year, as the 21-year-old has an ERA of over 15. It may be hard to measure the youngster’s success in exhibition games, as pitchers tend to tweak their mechanics as well as their pitch selection. It wouldn’t take much speculation to conclude that frustration may have led to an injury. Anthony Banda can attest to that.

Putting the Pieces Together

Barring an injury, it was unlikely that Henriquez was going to find a spot on the 40-man roster at the beginning of the season. Los Angeles has been very active this offseason in revamping their bullpen. The acquisitions of veteran relievers Tanner Scott and Kirby Yates make room premium on the pitching staff.

A Bump in the Road

As unfortunate as this news is, hopefully, this detour for Henriquez will be short-lived as he seems headed to a promising young career.
