Will the Dodgers Sell?

April 29, 2025 by Think Blue LA

Fourteen weeks before the 2025 MLB trade deadline is much too early to project trades the Dodgers may pursue to bolster their roster as buyers. But, will they also be sellers?

The current roster includes 12 players who can become free agents after the 2025 World Series: pitchers Luis Garcia, Clayton Kershaw, Michael Kopech, Dustin May, Alex Vesia (team option), and Kirby Yates; catcher Austin Barnes; infielders Kiké Hernández, Miguel Rojas, and Max Muncy (team option); and outfielders Michael Conforto and Chris Taylor (team option). The combined Average Annual Value (AAV) of those contracts is almost $91M.

Not gonna lie, the mere thought of future first-ballot Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw in anything but a Dodgers uniform is simply unbareable. (David Crane)

The great majority of those players will remain with the Dodgers past the trade deadline, but there are some roster moves that could make several of those players available.

When the Dodgers settle the center field position with Tommy Edman (or a player to be determined), Andy Pages could move permanently to left field, with Conforto and his remaining contract ($17M AAV) going elsewhere.

Starting pitchers Tony Gonsolin and Kershaw (backed up by Landon Knack, Emmet Sheehan, and possibly Bobby Miller) could make pending free agent Dustin May a trade chip sooner rather than later.

Reliever Garcia is on borrowed time with so many right handed pitchers scheduled to return before the trade deadline. Depending on his health, Michael Kopech could be shopped by the Dodgers. Even Alex Vesia is not a lock to remain a Dodger with lefties Anthony Banda, Jack Dreyer, and Tanner Scott on the roster and Justin Wrobleski only a phone call away at Triple-A Oklahoma City.

We will revisit buyers and sellers after the 2025 All Star break. Meanwhile, Dodgers fans can track performances and the injury status of those on the IL to consider which players may be trade capital at the end of July – if not before.
