Week 19: Glasnow shines, Dodgers split six games

Tyler Glasnow dominated, Shohei Ohtani tied a franchise home run record, and Tanner Scott injured his elbow. Dodgers won a series at home and lost a series on the road.

The Dodgers had a breakeven week against the Twins and Red Sox, which counts as a positive in what has been a terrible July.

Securing wins are like pulling teeth, with holes in the pitching staff and the offense. The Dodgers aren’t blowing out anyone these days — the things good teams do — very often at all, so their margin for error is quite thin.

Batter of the week

This could have easily gone to Shohei Ohtani again, with four more home runs in a very solid week. But it was a feast-or-famine week for Ohtani, who struck out 13 times in his 28 trips to the plate. We’ll go instead with Michael Conforto, who has been below replacement level on the season but led the team with five extra-base hits and a 1.224 OPS last week.

Pitcher of the week

Tyler Glasnow dominated with 12 strikeouts in seven strong innings on Wednesday. Despite allowing only one run, he did not get the win in that game, because that’s how things are going for the Dodgers right now.

Week 19 results

3-3 record
26 runs scored (4.33 per game)
25 runs allowed (4.17 per game)
.518 pythagorean win percentage

Year to date

61-45 record
556 runs scored (5.25 per game)
490 runs allowed (4.62 per game)
.558 pythagorean win percentage (59-47)

Standing: 1st place in NL West, four games up on San Diego

Miscellany

Record-tying homers: Shohei Ohtani homered in all three games against the Twins, extending his streak to five straight games with a home run. That tied a Dodgers franchise record, joining Roy Campanella, Shawn Green, Matt Kemp, Joc Pederson, and Max Muncy as others to do so during the same season.

Remember to save: Ben Casparius got the final three outs on Friday night at Fenway Park, a stadium he visited often growing up in Connecticut, earning his first professional save. His last save before Friday was in 2019 as a sophomore in college at North Carolina.

The count goes up: Alexis Díaz entered Tuesday’s game in the sixth inning at Dodger Stadium, and Edgardo Henriquez followed him in the seventh. They are the 36th and 37th pitchers to appear in a game for the Dodgers this season, three shy of the franchise record set last season. The Dodgers’ 37 pitchers used are second-most in the majors this season, one behind the Mets.

Transactions

Monday: Flamethrower Edgardo Henriquez was called up from Triple-A, and oft-used veteran Lou Trivino was designated for assignment.

Tuesday: Closer Tanner Scott landed on the injured list with elbow inflammation, and Alexis Díaz was called back up from Oklahoma City.

Sunday: Blake Treinen was activated off the 60-day IL, left-hander Justin Wrobleski got the call back to the majors, while Will Klein and Henriquez were optioned.

Game results

  • Monday: Dodgers 5, Twins 2
  • Tuesday: Twins 10, Dodgers 7
  • Wednesday: Dodgers 4, Twins 3
  • Friday: Dodgers 5, Red Sox 2
  • Saturday: Red Sox 4, Dodgers 2
  • Sunday: Red Sox 4, Dodgers 3

Up next

The Dodgers run the Miguel Cairo gauntlet, finishing off their three-city road trip by playing the Reds and Rays.

The weekend rotation for the Dodgers is a bit of a toss-up, figuring which day Blake Snell will make his return plus when Clayton Kershaw slots in, and however else the rest of the roster shakes out after Thursday’s trade deadline.
