The day after the Dodgers acquired Tommy Edman in a trade with St. Louis on July 29, Executive Vice President and General Manager Brandon Gomes said the team had been trying to get the veteran infielder/outfielder for some time.
In his three months with the Dodgers, the 29-year-old provided the team with clutch hitting and defense, versatility and consistent big performances in the postseason.
Now the 2024 National League Championship Series Most Valuable Player is going to be a Dodger for a long time.
The Dodgers have agreed on a contract extension with infielder/outfielder for five years through the 2029 season with a club option for the 2030 season.
Edman will enter his seventh Major League season in 2025 and has played in 633 games with St. Louis (2019–2023) and Los Angeles (2024), slashing .263/.317/.408/.726 with 59 home runs while playing six different positions. He has a career Baseball Reference WAR of 17.9–21st among all National League position players from 2019–2024.
He batted .237/.294/.417/.711 in 37 games with the Dodgers after coming over in a three-team trade with the Dodgers also receiving starting pitcher Jack Flaherty from St. Louis and reliever Michael Kopech from the Chicago White Sox. The Dodgers sent Miguel Vargas and minor leaguers Alexander Albertus and Jeral Perez to Chicago.
Edman, Flaherty and Kopech ended up being key figures in the Dodgers’ run to a World Series championship.
Edman went 11-for-27 and tied a Dodger League Championship Series record (Corey Seager, 2020) with 11 RBI in the NLCS against the Mets. He also went 5-for-17 with six runs. His 31 total bases in the postseason are seventh all time by a Dodger.
The switch-hitter appeared at 24 games in center field and 18 at shortstop during the regular season for the Dodgers. He won a Gold Glove in 2021 at the second base position with St. Louis.
