October 17, 2025, baseball fans around the world needed the legendary Vin Scully describing the indescribable performance of Shohei Ohtani in the fourth game of the 2025 National League Championship Series. Only Scully could have put into poetic words the performance of several lifetimes.
Personally, I was limited to “Oh my” (the catchphrase of the late Dick Enberg), and “I don’t believe what I just saw” (the words of the late Jack Buck).
In my 70+ years of watching Major League Baseball, I have seen some of the greatest players ever; position players like Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, Rickey Henderson, and pitchers like Sandy Koufax, Bob Gibson, Nolan Ryan, and Clayton Kershaw. But, I have never seen anyone come close to the all around performance of Ohtani.

The average annual value of Ohtani’s ten year contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers is $70 million — he is underpaid.
Last night, I watched Ohtani cement his position as Major League Baseball’s G.O.A.T. and his future entry into the Hall of Fame as a unanimous first-ballot member.

I’m glad I watched, because: There are no words.
Go Dodgers!
