This year’s All-Star game was one for the books – the record books.
When the game ended in a 6-6 tie after nine innings, it meant that a Home Run Derby-style swing-off would be used to determine the All-Star Game winner, similar to penalty kicks used in soccer or a shootout used in hockey.
American League (and New York Yankees) manager Aaron Boone picked Brent Rooker (A’s), Randy Arozarena (Mariners), and Jonathan Aranda (Rays) as his AL swing-off representatives, with New York Yankees coach Travis Chapman doing the pitching. National League (and Dodgers) manager Dave Roberts picked Kyle Stowers (Marlins), Kyle Schwarber (Phillies), and Pete Alonso (Mets) as his NL swing-off representatives,
Alonso never swung a bat.
After Rooker, Arozarena, and Aranda hit a combined three homers for the AL, Stowers hit one and Schwarber three (on three swings) to give the NL the 4-3 swing-off win and 7-6 All-Star Game win.
So, who served up those swing-off and All-Star Game-winning dingers for the NL? None other than extremely popular Dodgers third-base coach Dino Ebel, who humbly said: “I’m just the guy that throws BP.”
One of those “BP” pitches went an insane 461 feet to right-center off the bat of Schwarber.
