The incredible Shohei Ohtani does it — 50/50 and new Dodger home run and RBI records
by Cary Osborne
Major League Baseball is 155 years old. The Dodgers have played 135 seasons.
Shohei Ohtani is a first for both.
Ohtani reached 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases for the season both on Thursday.
He is the first player in Major League history with a 50/50 season — at least 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases. He is also the first Dodger to reach 50 home runs in a season, breaking the franchise single-season home run record he shared with Shawn Green, who hit 49 in 2001.
“Just happy, relieved and very respectful to the peers and everyody who came before who played the sport of baseball,” Ohtani said.

Ohtani stole base № 50 in the first inning. He stole base №51 in the second inning. He hit home run № 49 in the sixth inning, 50 in the seventh inning and 51 in the ninth inning during an incredible single-game performance in Miami.
The Dodgers won 20–4 clinching their 12th consecutive playoff spot. It is the first time in Ohtani’s seven-year career that he has reached the postseason.
He went 6-for-6 with three home runs, two stolen bases, two doubles and 10 RBI. He tallied 17 total bases and scored four runs and finished a triple shy of the cycle. Ohtani’s 10 RBI are a single-game franchise record. Gil Hodges (Aug. 31, 1950) and James Loney (Sept. 28. 2006) drove in nine runs in a game for the Dodgers.

It’s the 16th time in Major League Baseball history where a player has driven in at least 10 runs in a game. Only three players have had more total bases in a single game:
Green (Dodgers): 19 on May 23, 2002
Joe Adcock: 18 on July 31, 1954
Josh Hamilton: 18 on May 8, 2012
It is the first game in Major League history in which a player notched six hits, three home runs, two stolen bases and 10 RBI.

This is the first three home run game of Ohtani’s career. It’s also his career high for hits, RBI and total bases in a game.
“I can’t really explain it. I’m really just a fan watching it just like y’all are,” said Mookie Betts. “I just happen to have the closest seat. It’s just unexplainable witnessing history like that.”
Ohtani now holds the 50th season in Major League history in which a player has hit at least 50 home runs.
“Huge congrats to Shohei,” Green said. “If you’re going to have somebody break your record, who better than the greatest player who ever lived?”
Ohtani has 92 extra-base hits. That is a new Los Angeles Dodgers record. Freddie Freeman had 90 in 2023.
Babe Herman holds the franchise record with 94 in 1930.
