For the fifth season in a row, the Dodgers are sending at least five players to the Major League Baseball All-Star Game.
This year, it’s six going to Arlington, Texas for the Midsummer Classic — the highest Dodger total since 2017.
The Dodgers, after Shohei Ohtani was elected a starter to the 2024 All-Star Game on Tuesday, received five more All-Star selections when reserves were announced on Sunday.
They are: First baseman Freddie Freeman (eighth selection), Mookie Betts (eighth), catcher Will Smith (second), outfielder Teoscar Hernández (second) and starting pitcher Tyler Glasnow (first).
Ohtani came into Sunday leading the National League in home runs (28), slugging (.643), OPS (1.045), runs (72), extra-base hits (53), total bases (220), weighted runs created plus (190), Baseball Reference WAR (5.1) and Fangraphs WAR (5.0). He is now a four-time All-Star and a first-time NL All-Star.
He set the Dodger first-half record on Sunday when he singled in the third inning to collect his 221st total base. He stole two bases the same inning to become the Major Leagues’ first 20/20 man (28 homers and 20 stolen bases).
Betts, whose hand was fractured by a pitch June 16, still ranks third in the NL in bWAR (4.1), despite missing the Dodgers’ last 18 games. Betts joins Jackie Robinson and Pedro Guerrero as Dodgers who have been selected to All-Star teams as an outfielder and an infielder in their career.
Betts, now a four-time All-Star with the Dodgers, is batting .304/.405/.488/.892 with 10 home runs and 40 RBI in 72 games this season.
Glasnow is the only one of the bunch who is a first-time All-Star. The nine-year veteran leads the NL with 143 strikeouts, opponents’ batting average (.183) and strikeouts per nine innings (11.8). He has a 3.47 ERA and 0.93 WHIP in 18 starts (109 innings).
Freeman has been selected to the All-Star team in all three seasons as a Dodger.
He came into today ranked in the NL top 10 in average (.301, sixth), on-base percentage (.405, second), slugging (.508, fifth), OPS (.913, fourth), wRC+ (147, sixth), hits (99, sixth), doubles (25, second), RBI (58, sixth), walks (53, second), bWAR (3.5) and fWAR (3.3, tied for seventh).
Smith is now an All-Star for the second time, and he is the first Dodger catcher to make All-Star teams in consecutive seasons since Russell Martin in 2007 and 2008.
He came into today leading all NL catchers in home runs (15), RBI (55), slugging (.507), OPS (.854), wRC+ (138) and all Major League catchers with a 3.4 fWAR.
Hernández is an All-Star for the second time in his career, having also been selected to the 2021 American League All-Star Team with Toronto.
Hernández came into the day leading all NL outfielders with 19 home runs and 60 RBI. He is batting .258/.317/.484
It’s always been a goal of mine to go to the All Star game and I think just like injuries and stuff in the past have made it like not possible for me to go. So it’s special to be able to go this year, especially with like the hometown team and everything.
a big honor. I think just try posting up every start and trying to log innings and do well for your team. And I’m just glad I was able to make every start and just pitch it all the season
I don’t know how realistic it was. But when I was a little kid, yeah, I want to play for the Dodgers. I mean, it’s it’s crazy that that it’s happening for sure.
just like incorporating the two seems been helpful. They’re just like different scouting, report stuff and certain usages in certain games just stuff like that. Of all
