He did it again. Thirty-year-old Dodgers catcher Will Smith hit another ninth-inning (or later) game-winning hit, this one a rocket double into the left field corner to drive in what would prove to be the game-winning run in Tuesday’s exciting 5-4 Dodgers win over the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.
But it was an incredible 10-pitch walk by Dodgers pinch-hitter Michael Conforto ahead of Smith’s double that proved to be the real game-winner.

“Mikey’s at-bat was the at-bat of the game right there,” Smith told SportsNet LA’s Kirsten Watson postgame. “[I] got a mistake heater, you know, over the heart of the plate, able to get it in the outfield, and yeah, by God, he scored,” Smith added of his RBI double to score speedy pinch-runner James Outman – from first base – for the eventual game-winner.

“The at-bat right there verses (Reds right-hander (Emilio) Pagán, just to kinda get deep in the count, get behind, but still fight, 10 pitches, get on base, took some really good swings to spoil some pitches, and got a chance to get James in there to score from first, which was huge,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts echoed postgame of Conforto’s at-bat of the game. “But just the life to the at-bats, much better,” he added.
Much better indeed.
