Sauer Power

May 1, 2025 by Think Blue LA

Fans who watched, listened to, or were among the 46,502 at Dodger Stadium on Tuesday night, were treated to what was among one of the most incredible Dodgers games they will ever watch, listen to, or see in person, as their beloved team pounded the NL East last place Miami Marlins 15-2.

Among the many remarkable stats from the 2:48-hour-long lopsided contest were these this little tidbits:

But Wait! There’s More

Without question, the highlight of the night (in addition to every Dodgers player having reached base at least once during the game) was the phenomenal pitching performance by 26-year-old Dodgers right-hander Matt Sauer, who was nothing short of sensational in his 5.0 innings in relief of 26-year-old Dodgers left-handed starter Jack Dreyer.

Sauer finished his second appearance of the season striking out five Marlins batters, including third baseman Connor Norby for the second out of the fourth inning. (SportsNet LA)

“Coming in to today I knew that a goal for me was to pitch bulk, and the offense jumping out and ahead and giving me that big lead gives me the confidence just to throw everything, you know, and pound the zone, and get ahead, and let’s roll with it and try to get as many innings as possible,” Sauer told SportsNet LA’s David Vassegh postgame.

“I can’t say enough about his performance, got his first Major League win, which was great” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said of Sauer’s outstanding performance, during which the Santa Maria, CA native and 2017 second-round draft pick by the New York Yankees out of Righetti High School in Santa Maria, allowed only one run on five hits, while walking none and striking out four. “To chew up five innings was big, efficient. We needed every bit of it considering where our ‘pen is at. What Matt did today picked us up big time,” added the Dodgers skipper.

As for that “big lead” thing, it started in the bottom of the first inning when, on the first pitch from Marlins right-hander Sandy Alcantara to Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani, the Oshu, Japan native roped it 394 feet into the Marlins bullpen before the proverbial seats were even warm.

One pitch, One home run, 1-0 Dodgers.

With the Dodgers win and the San Diego Padres beating the San Francisco Giants 7-4 at Petco Park on Friday, Roberts’ team moved into first place in the NL West:
