Now They Count

March 27, 2025 by Think Blue LA

The Dodgers finished Spring Training 2025 on Tuesday evening with a 4-1 win over the Anaheim Angels of Anaheim to take two of three from the Halos in the so-called Freeway Series.

Oh sure, the Dodgers will resume regular-season play with a 2-0 record already under their belts having swept the Chicago Cubs at the Tokyo Dome in Japan, but their real pursuit to repeat as NL West West, National League, and World Series Champions begins on Thursday afternoon against the AL Central Detroit Tigers at what will be a sold-out Dodger Stadium.

Although long referred to as “meaningless Spring Training games,” there were several noteworthy performances by Dodgers players and pitchers in those “meaningless Spring Training games.”

It is impossible to overlook or ignore the .290/.357/.526/.883 slash-line posted by popular 32-year-old Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernández that included two home runs and nine RBIs in his combined 38 Spring Training at-bats.

Teoscar slugged his second home run of the Spring, a 390-foot second-inning solo shot to left-center field, in Monday’s 5-4 loss to the Angels. He also had an RBI single in the top of the fifth inning accounting for two of the Dodgers four runs. (SportsNet LA)

It is also impossible to overlook or ignore the outstanding pitching of 27-year-old Dodgers right-hander Dustin May in his four Spring Training starts and combined 10.0 Spring Training innings pitched. The Justin, TX native and Dodgers third-round draft pick in 2016 out of Northwest High School in Justin picked up his second win of the Spring on Tuesday (with no losses), to finish his Spring with a respectable 3.60 ERA. He also finished having struck out 12 of the 38 opposing batters he faced, including six in Tuesday’s Cactus League finale. The popular redhead allowed only five runs (four earned) and only four hits (one home run), while walking six this Spring.

May’s sixth and final strikeout on Tuesday was that of future Hall of Famer Mike Trout on a nasty 85.4-MPH curveball to lead off the bottom of the fourth inning. (SportsNet LA)

The Dodgers wrapped up Spring Training 2025 with a solid 14-9 (.609) record to finish third in the Cactus League behind only the 21-6 division-rival San Francisco Giants and the 20-12 Kansas City Royals of the AL Central Division.

…but beginning Thursday, now they count.
