Los Angeles beat San Diego three games out of four to solidify the top spot in the division. Rafael Devers’ first week in San Francisco included homering against his old team. Colorado had its first winning week of 2025.
The Dodgers and Padres met for four games in Los Angeles to highlight National League West action this week. The second series in an 11-day span made for an emotionally charged affair, with four hit batters apiece during the four games at Dodger Stadium. Dave Roberts and Mike Shildt were ejected after things bubbled over Thursday, and were both suspended for Friday for unsportsmanlike conduct.
San Diego salvaged the finale but Los Angeles won three out of four and five out of seven over their rivals, solidifying the Dodgers’ spot atop the division.
Around the NL West
Among the problems of late for the Padres, as outlined last week by Cheri Bell at Gaslamp Ball, is a struggling offense. San Diego designated hitters for instance are hitting just .203/.276/.275, with a 62 wRC+ that’s fourth-worst in the majors at the position.
Veteran outfielder Jason Heyward was designated for assignment on Saturday after hitting just .176/.223/.271 in 34 games for the Padres.
Rafael Devers in his first week with the Giants had five hits in 23 at-bats, including a home run in Saturday’s win over the Red Sox, the team that traded for him.
Aside from the Dodgers at 5-2, the only other team in the division with a winning record was the Rockies, who won three in a row against the Nationals, then notched a win on Sunday over the Diamondbacks. Colorado is still on pace for 125 losses, but their winning week got them out of “worst 78-game start to a season in modern MLB history” status, with the Rockies (18-60) one game up on the 1932 Red Sox (17-61).
“I mean, that’s life. Life’s gonna hit you in the face a lot,” Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer told Gabe Lacques at USA Today. “You got to keep waking up and getting after it and really, there’s no way around it. You got to go straight through it.”
