New Dodgers Utility Man Making Steps Toward Return

August 1, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

One of the newest Los Angeles Dodgers, Tommy Edman, is hoping for a quick return and looking forward to getting back to playing on a big league diamond. He took batting practice before the game against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park last night. The super-utility man hasn’t played all year due to a surgically repaired wrist. Unfortunately, he is also recovering from a sprained ankle he sustained while rehabbing in the St. Louis Cardinals organization. Edman was part of a three-team trade between the Chicago White Sox, the Cardinals, and the Dodgers on Monday.

Tommy Edman Making Steps Toward Return for Dodgers

Floating Position Player

Edman is expected to provide added versatility to an already flexible roster. The former Gold Glover has spent some time at third base, second base, shortstop, and center field. When healthy in 2023, the former Cardinal proved he can provide punch with the bat. He had a .248 batting average and 17 home runs. Although the former career Cardinal’s return from the injured list appears imminent, the Dodgers have not yet set a date.

Reinforcements Coming

The Dodgers have had a plethora of players on the IL recently,  essentially a starting rotation worth of pitchers and a good amount of bullpen arms. Mookie Betts (broken hand) and Max Muncy (strained oblique) are missing from the infield.  In addition, Freddie Freeman is on the family emergency list, as his son is in the hospital. Betts and Freeman are scheduled to return soon. Muncy’s timetable remains unclear. As these All-Stars return, the Dodgers will have to make some difficult roster decisions soon.

Trade Pieces Arrive

These roster moves will have to take into account the other players Los Angeles acquired by trade. Michael Kopech also came in the 3-team trade with Edman. New acquisitions Jack Flaherty, Amed Rosario, and Kevin Kiermaier are all expected to be placed on the 40-man roster. For the Dodgers, all this depth is a good problem to have.
