Major League Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred announced that free agent pitcher Julio Urías, formerly of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has been suspended until the conclusion of the 2025 All-Star break for violating Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. Urías will be reinstated from the restricted list on July 17, 2025.
The league recently investigated into an incident involving Urías and his girlfriend at an LAFC game in September 2023 when he was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence. Video of the incident was released and now that MLB has thoroughly investigated, the suspension has been levied.
“The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball has completed its investigation into allegations that free agent pitcher Julio Urías violated Major League Baseball’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. Having reviewed all of the available evidence, I have concluded that Mr. Urías violated our Policy and that discipline is appropriate,” Manfred said in a statement.
Urías has agreed to submit to an evaluation by the Joint Policy Board under the collectively bargained policy, and to comply with any of the board’s recommendations. MLB will continue to make support services available to Urías and his family with the former Dodgers pitcher entering into a program last May.
The Dodgers originally signed Urías out of Mexico at the age of 16 in 2012. He made his MLB debut at age 19 in 2016 and went 60-25 with a 3.11 ERA in 158 career appearances across eight seasons with the team. Urías notably recorded the final out of the Dodgers’ World Series victory in 2020 and finished in the top seven in National League Cy Young voting in both 2021 and 2022.
This marks the second domestic violence suspension for the 28-year-old, making him the first player to be suspended twice under the new policy that was established in 2015. Of the 18 players suspended under the policy, only three have been for more than 95 games with Urías joining Trevor Bauer and Sam Dyson on that list.
Julio Urías remains a free agent
Julio Urías’ latest domestic violence suspension comes from an incident in 2023, his final season with the Dodgers. Urías was in a contract year and potentially in line to sign a big free agent deal but instead has not been signed by any team in the last two offseasons.
Now that MLB has completed its investigation and announced the suspension, Urîas is free to sign with any team, although it remains to be seen if there will be any interest.
