There have been a lot of mock drafts over the last few months, and a few names pop up quite often with respect to the Dodgers’ first pair of selections in the 2025 MLB Draft. In Kiley McDaniel’s latest mock draft at ESPN, we got a familiar selection for Los Angeles as well as a new name to ponder.
McDaniel on Friday had the Dodgers with the 40th overall pick taking Clemson outfielder Cam Cannarella, a player we’ve written about previously. But McDaniel also had the Dodgers taking “high upside prep player” Kruz Schoolcraft, a left-hander out of high school in Oregon at No. 41.
Listed by most draft outlets as a pitcher, the exceedingly tall Schoolcraft also played first base for Sunset High School in Portland. From Nik Streng at Oregon Live:
Standing at 6-foot-8, Schoolcraft was a two-way star for the Apollos this year. As a left-handed pitcher, he had a .389 earned run average with 96 strikeouts to 22 hits allowed in 54 innings pitched. On offense, Schoolcraft was the Apollos’ lead-off hitter with a .637 on-base percentage. He had a .482 batting average with 41 hits, 30 runs batted in and 10 home runs.
Schoolcraft is ranked the 19th-best prospect in the draft by MLB Pipeline, and 21st overall by Baseball America. His college commitment to Tennessee might explain why he could be available for the Dodgers to select at 40th or 41st overall, as Jim Callis at MLB Pipeline noted in his draft mailbag.
“It’s Sunset HS (Portland, Ore.) left-hander Kruz Schoolcraft (No. 19), who has one of the highest ceilings in the Draft but is also a prep pitcher with a strong commitment to Tennessee,” Callis wrote. “Because high school arms are so volatile, most clubs would rather take them after their first selection, and Schoolcraft’s price tag could take him out of play for some teams.”
This is where the Dodgers having $9.03 million to spend, their second-largest draft bonus pool in the 14 years of the current format, could factor in.
The MLB Draft is a two-day affair from Atlanta, with the Dodgers making four selections on Sunday night.
