When Miguel Rojas looks back at his 12-year career, he sees the player he intended to be as a rookie. He describes himself as serviceable, a mentor and a leader on and off the field.
His Dodger teammates agree with him. And with their support, Rojas was selected as the 20th annual Roy Campanella Award winner. This is the second consecutive season the veteran is the Campanella honoree.
Rojas, 36, becomes the third player to win back-to-back Campanella awards, joining Clayton Kershaw (2013–14) and Justin Turner (2019–20). He’s the fourth player to win multiple times, joining Kershaw, Turner (three times) and Chase Utley (2016, 2018).
The award is voted on by Dodger uniformed personnel to recognize the player who best exemplifies the spirit and leadership of the late Hall of Fame catcher.
“It means a lot to me. One of the things I’m most grateful about is the opinion of my teammates,” Rojas says. “They see me every day, they’ve gotten to really know me. They see who I am, and it’s not just what I can do on the scoreboard. They care about the kind of person I can be and how I can help them, even when I’m not playing.”
As a rookie, Rojas recognized that his impact could go beyond the baseball field. He was supported by the veterans around him and instinctively knew that was a role he wanted to fulfill.
“I just feel like it’s part of my personality,” Rojas says. “What I bring to the team, not just as a player, but as a person. I’m not going to be playing every day, but I can still find a way to help my team win.”
Rojas’ second stint as a Dodger has included three impactful seasons in the batter’s box and in the field. But his trusted voice with rookies and veterans and work ethic have elevated his profile on the team.
Rojas is proud of that. He emphasizes to players the importance of wearing a Dodger uniform every day. He also provides guidance and support when a player is struggling.
“I feel very proud walking into this clubhouse every day. I don’t take it for granted,” Rojas says. “When you’re part of this clubhouse, you’re one of the best in the world. You have a lot of responsibilities on your shoulders because you’re supposed to win.”
