Rule 5 Draft pick from December now returns to Dodgers minor leagues. Ureña, who has pitched for 3 teams this season, cleared waivers after getting designated for assignment on Tuesday.
The Dodgers on Saturday got Garrett McDaniels back from the Angels, who had selected the left-hander in the Rule 5 Draft back in December.
McDaniels on Monday was designated for assignment by the Angels after missing 34 games with left biceps tendinits. The 25-year-old had a 5.91 ERA in his 10 games for the Halos, with more walks (eight) than strikeouts (six) in his 10⅔ innings. That was to be expected from a pitcher whose two games last September for Double-A Tulsa were his only professional games above Class-A to that point.
The Angels paid $100,000 to the Dodgers for McDaniel in December, the fee for players taken in the Rule 5 Draft. After the left-hander cleared waivers, he had to be offered back to the Dodgers for half the price ($50,000) before he could be sent to the minors. The Dodgers accepted, and McDaniels is now back in the organization, and not on the 40-man roster.
José Ureña’s time on the 40-man roster lasted one week, signed to a major league contract on June 3 and designated for assignment on Tuesday. In between, the veteran right-hander pitched in two games — both were 6-5 wins over the Mets — and allowed one run in his three innings.
The 33-year-old Ureña, who has pitched for the Mets, Blue Jays, and Dodgers this season, cleared waivers and elected free agency on Friday.
