Pitchers and catchers reported to Dodgers camp at Camelback Ranch on Monday, and will hold their first official workout on Tuesday. Most of our daily questions thus far have revolved around pitching, so let’s move to the other end of the battery today.
How many starts at catcher will Will Smith have in 2025?
Smith’s 117 starts behind the plate in 2024 were a career high, thanks in part to Shohei Ohtani taking up nearly all the starts at designated hitter, mostly removing the safety valve, pseudo-rest option to keep Smith’s bat in the lineup at times when he’s not catching.
Here are Smith’s starts over the last four full major league seasons, for reference:
- 2021: 114 starts (111 at catcher, three at DH)
- 2022: 130 starts (106 at catcher, 24 at DH)
- 2023: 120 starts (106 at catcher, 14 at DH)
- 2024: 120 starts (117 at catcher, 3 at DH)
