Highly Touted Dodgers Infielder Will Start the Season at Triple-A

March 12, 2025 by Last Word On Baseball

Dodgers infielder Hyeseong Kim will open the season in the minors, Dave Roberts said.

Los Angeles Dodgers infielder Hyeseong Kim will not travel with the team to Japan, and will instead start the season in the minors at Triple-A Oklahoma City, according to David Vassegh of Sportsnet LA. Manager Dave Roberts made the announcement after the Dodgers finished their last Cactus League game. The Dodgers leave for Tokyo tomorrow and begin the season against the Chicago Cubs on March 18.

Hyeseong Kim Will Begin Season in the Minors

Surprise Signing

The Dodgers have had an active offseason, signing multiple front-line free agents. Kim’s signing raised some eyebrows, given the fact that his natural position is shortstop. Los Angeles has already tabbed perennial All-Star Mookie Betts to patrol that position. However, the Dodgers place a premium on team versatility, and Kim was getting time at second base. The defensive transition went seamlessly.

Swinging Reconstruction

However, Kim was not known for his bat when he played in the Korean Baseball Organization. As a result, the Dodgers determined that if he were to have long-term success at the major league level, he would have to make adjustments to his swing. Roberts broached the subject that the native Korean may begin the season in the minors to continue refining his offensive craft. Although there have been a few bright spots along the way, it is apparent that Kim needs more time for his swing to be more consistent. Thus, the move to the minors.

Who Plays Second Base?

Tommy Edman, who was originally slated to be the Dodgers’ Opening Day center fielder, will most likely begin 2025 at second base. Miguel Rojas and Chris Taylor can spell the veteran when needed. As for who will man center field, that is yet to be determined. Andy Pages and James Outman are fighting for the last roster spot. Whoever wins will likely land in center field on Opening Day.

As for Hyeseong Kim, he will make his major league debut soon. Delay is not denial. He just needs some seasoning.
