Sitting in third place 8.0 games back of the National League West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers with only 16 regular-season games remaining isn’t what you would consider a good position to be in for the 74-72 San Francisco Giants.
Then again, leading the division by only 2.5 games with only 16 regular-season games remaining for the 82-64 Los Angeles Dodgers isn’t exactly what you would consider ideal either, yet here we are.

Needless to say, this weekend’s three-game series against The Hated Ones at Oracle Park in the South Beach neighborhood of San Francisco could very well determine whether the Dodgers will win the division over the hard-charging NL West second place 80-67 San Diego Padres or allow the Giants to be their spoilers, which they would absolutely love to do.

“The Giants are playing as good of baseball as anyone right now and they’re fighting for a Wild Card, so we’re going to give it everything we have,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told reporters of the upcoming series against the Giants following his team’s 9-0 crushing of the NL West last-place Colorado Rockies on Wednesday. “So, you know, you’ve got a rival, division rival, a team that’s hungry and playing well, so, it’s gonna be a battle up there to do that,” he added.
A battle indeed.
