Dustin May makes his first road start of the year
A few years ago, the projection of a future matchup in 2025 between Dustin May and Mackenzie Gore could reasonably be assumed as a duel of two aces for the division-rival Padres and Dodgers. Unfortunately for May and Gore, their first few seasons encountered more than their fair share of speed bumps, and now they still look to become the star pitchers we all envisioned them being as prospects. Gore is with the Nats having been a part of the first Juan Soto trade way back when, and May is still with the Dodgers.
Gore and May will meet up as the Dodgers play the first of a three-game series at Nationals Park, this being Gore’s second outing at home after he was magnificent against the Phillies to open the year. Gore’s outstanding first start saw him strike out 13 Phillies across six frames, a point worth noting for a Dodgers team that struck out a combined 17 times against Jesús Luzardo and Cristopher Sánchez, the two lefties they faced in their last series against the Phillies.
May also flashed all of the talent that made him perhaps the most GIF-able pitcher in baseball, allowing one unearned run on one hit in five innings against the Braves last Tuesday.
Washington’s offensive numbers early on aren’t anything all that impressive, but they’ll be coming in riding a high, having just hung a loss on none other than Corbin Burnes in the series finale against the Diamondbacks. Eleven men reached for the Nats as they got Burnes for four runs in a close 5-4 win at home.
The Dodgers, on the other hand, come off their first losing series of the year. However, the offense certainly didn’t go down quietly, battling to make each of the losses very close and combining to score nine runs in them.
One man who will be happy to see Gore, or any lefty on the mound for that matter, is Teoscar Hernández. Not only does Hernández have a homer in three at-bats against Gore, but he is coming off his best game of that season with two homers and five RBI.
