Although it started out a bit slow, Sunday’s series finale between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres at Petco Park finished fast and furious. The Dodgers 8-2 win prevented Dodgers manager Dave Roberts‘ team from being swept by Padres manager Mike Shildt‘s team in what was arguably the single biggest series of the Dodgers 2025 regular season – to this point, at least.
“I thought today was more indicative of what, you know, we’re gonna do, we expect going forward, and just the fight, the grind, um, you know, taking what the pitcher gives you, and then, if there’s slug there, there’s slug, but it’s just a by-product of good at-bats all day today,” Roberts told SportsNet LA’s David Vassegh postgame.
There was slug. A lot of slug. Four home runs of slug.
Dodgers first baseman and future Hall of Famer Freddie Freeman started Sunday’s slug fest with a 415-foot solo blast to center field with one out in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 2-2. The popular Villa Park, CA native and second-round draft pick in 2007 out of Modena High School in Orange, CA homered again in the top of the seventh inning, a 349-footer to right, this following a 387-foot three–run shot to right-center field by Dodgers catcher Dalton Rushing (his third of the season) to make it 7-2.

But wait! There’s more!
Dodgers designated hitter Shohei Ohtani capped off the slug with a 409-foot solo blast to right-center field with one out in the top of the ninth to seal the deal at 8-2. It was the international superstar and future Hall of Famer’s National League-leading 45th home run of the season.

With Sunday’s win, the Dodgers are once again tied atop the National League West with the Padres with 31 regular season games remaining, none against the Padres – postseason notwithstanding, if you get my drift.
