The Los Angeles Dodgers have traded right-handed reliever Ryan Brasier to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later or cash. The veteran was designated for assignment after Los Angeles signed free agent Kirby Yates. The Cubs announced the deal on their social media feeds.

Dodgers Reliever Ryan Brasier Traded to Cubs
A Numbers Game
The Dodgers had to make a trade by tonight to make room on the 40-man roster or be forced to put Brasier on waivers. After the trade, the Cubs designated left-hander Rob Zastryzny for assignment to make room for their new acquisition. If Brasier is anywhere as effective with the Cubs as he was with the Dodgers, Chicago won’t regret it.
From Released to a World Series Ring
Braiser was released in the middle of 2023 by the Boston Red Sox. He then signed a minor-league deal with the Dodgers. The right-hander rewarded Los Angeles. He pitched to a 0.70 ERA for the rest of 2o23. Consequently, the 38-year-old signed a two-year deal that offseason to remain with the Boys in Blue.
This past season, the right-hander was part of a bullpen that had to carry more than its own weight because the starting rotation was beset with injuries. Unfortunately, Brasier was sidelined for a good portion of the year as well with a calf issue. When he was available, he furnished a 3.54 ERA and a low walk rate.
A Pivotal Start?
Plagued with a thin rotation in the postseason, the Dodgers turned to Brasier. The career reliever served as the opener in an elimination game against the San Diego Padres. The wily veteran held the feisty Friars down. As a result, Los Angeles lived to see another game, and eventually won the World Series.
The reliable reliever is owed $4.5 million this season. No doubt, the Cubs will consider it a small price to pay if Brasier can replicate his recent success.
