The Dodgers missed an opportunity to distance themselves from the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday. They fell to Arizona 14–3 at Chase Field in the third game of the series.
Their lead in the National League West was reduced to five games ahead of the second-place Diamondbacks.
The Dodgers’ four-game winning streak was snapped after an eight-run second inning by the Diamondbacks buried them. Justin Wrobleski faced 11 batters in the frame and was tagged for eight earned runs on seven hits.
Wrobleski pitched into the sixth inning — allowing the bullpen to recover from Friday’s eight-inning coverage. The lefty finished the day with 10 earned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
The Dodgers put up their first run in the fourth when Chris Taylor scored on a groundout by Tommy Edman. Kevin Kiermaier and Austin Barners each drove in a run in the sixth inning to cut into the Diamondbacks’ lead. Barnes led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a two-out RBI.
In the first two games of the series, the Dodgers totaled 18 runs on 26 hits. Three former MVPs in Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman were responsible for 10 runs and eight hits Friday and Saturday. The top-of-the-order hitters combined for one hit on Sunday (Betts and Freeman left the game after two at-bats each).
The lineup went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and left eight runners stranded on base.
Familiar Faces Rejoin the Roster
The Dodgers added Andy Pages and Wrobleski as the active roster was expanded to 28 players on Sunday.
Additionally, Ben Casparius was optioned after he made his Major League debut on Saturday and earned the win. Michael Grove was recalled in his place.
Where They Stand
The Dodgers will send Jack Flaherty (10–6) to the mound on Monday against Eduardo Rodriguez (2–0).
