Dodgers still looking to roll, but keep finding bumps

It’s been a bumpy start to the second half. The latest bump — a 4–3 loss to the Red Sox on Sunday — highlights an offense that is trying to fire on all cylinders.

“I thought we had some good at-bats. We had Walker (Buehler) on the ropes a couple of times, (but) couldn’t get the big hit,” said manager Dave Roberts. “Even when (reliever Aroldis) Chapman went out, first and second base and nobody out, couldn’t score there. We had some opportunities to cash in today, but we just couldn’t get that hit.”

The Dodgers stranded a season-high 13 runners and went 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position on Sunday.

The lineup recorded 25 hits in the three-game series against the Red Sox with four home runs at Fenway Park. The Dodgers out-hit the Red Sox in two out of three games, but they also lost two out of three in the series.

There have been some individual positives. Shohei Ohtani went 2-for-4 on Sunday with a pair of singles. Ohtani has hit safely in his last eight games with six home runs.

He’s batting .313 (10-for-32) in that span with 11 RBI and 1.452 OPS.

Teoscar Hernández hit two home runs in the series after he went 19 games without hitting one.

Michael Conforto went 3-for-4 on Sunday with a home run and two doubles. It was his third three-hit game this season. His homer gave the Dodgers a 2–1 lead in the fourth.

The Red Sox scored four runs against starter Dustin May on Sunday.

“I felt good in the middle part, definitely in the fifth inning, just left too much stuff over the middle, not quality strikes,” May said. “I felt good. Mechanics were in a good spot. I just didn’t execute.”

The bullpen was strong in the series. Jack Dreyer and Justin Wrobleski tossed three combined scoreless innings. Dodger relievers posted 10 1/3 scoreless frames against the Red Sox with eight strikeouts.
