Los Angeles Dodgers right-handed starter Gavin Stone underwent shoulder surgery on Wednesday, officially ending any hope of his return this season. Unfortunately, the recovery is also likely to keep him out for the entire 2025 season. The team announced the news in a statement on Saturday. Dr. Neal ElAttrache performed the procedure.

Dodgers Starter Gavin Stone Likely Out for 2025 After Shoulder Surgery
Stone was in the middle of a solid first full season in the majors before his shoulder injury sidelined him. In 25 starts comprising 140 1/3 innings, he pitched to an 11-5 record with a 3.53 ERA and a 1.211 WHIP, striking out 116 while walking only 37. On June 26, Stone tossed his first career complete-game shutout on the road against the Chicago White Sox. The soon-to-be 26-year-old was a fifth-round pick in the 2020 MLB Draft out of the University of Central Arkansas.
In early September, Stone went on the 10-day injured list with shoulder inflammation. His season was in doubt, although both he and the team were holding out some hope for a return in the postseason. However, the injury would ultimately require him to go under the knife, setting the table for a 2026 return.
The Dodgers rotation is currently thinner than they’d like, as Tyler Glasnow is also out for the year. Luckily, these injuries are somewhat offset by the recent return of Yoshinobu Yamamoto from injury. His strong performance in Friday’s Game 5 against the San Diego Padres helped propel the Dodgers to the National League Championship Series. Still, Los Angeles has been relying heavily on their bullpen to get more outs per game than usual. That trend may very well continue as the team gets ready to face the upstart New York Mets in the NLCS. The series begins Sunday night at Dodger Stadium, with Jack Flaherty set to take the hill for the Dodgers against Kodai Senga.
