The Los Angeles Dodgers took another hit today. President of Baseball Operations Andrew Friedman announced that right-handed starting pitcher Tony Gonsolin had elbow surgery today and is out for the remainder of the 2025 season, as reported by Fabian Ardaya of The Athletic. The recovery time is eight to 10 months. This is a revision of the 2023 Tommy John surgery, complete with flexor repair, that made Gonsolin miss the entire 2024 season.

Tony Gonsolin Out for Season After Elbow Surgery
Andrew Friedman said Tony Gonsolin underwent an internal brace procedure today. His season is obviously over. It’s an 8-10 month timeline.

Gone Mum
Tony Gonsolin was slated to be the Dodgers’ fifth starter out of spring training. However, he landed on the injured list after hurting his back lifting weights. He came back briefly early in the season before landing on the IL again with elbow pain. Dodgers management has been quiet about the right-hander’s progress since he has been sidelined, and now we know why.
Effective…When Healthy
When Gonsolin returned from the IL the first time this season, he showed flashes of his old self. In his first starts, the pinpoint control was there, but as 2025 progressed, his walk rate went up and his velocity went down. He finishes his abbreviated year with an ERA right at 5.00. This is a far cry from his spectacular 2022, in which he had a 16-1 record with an ERA of 2.14. It also earned him an All-Star appearance. Now, he will not see a major league mound until the middle of 2026, at the earliest.
The Hits Just Keep Coming
The Gonsolin news comes just after reliever Brock Stewart was placed on the IL. Stewart will miss time with shoulder inflammation. However, the Dodgers are hopeful that it isn’t season-ending. Los Angeles has not been the juggernaut that they had hoped. They are 12-19 since July 4th, and just one game ahead of the hard-charging San Diego Padres. Will they be able to win consistently again? Who knows? But it won’t be smooth sailing.
