Dodgers Sign Tommy Edman To 5-Year Contract Extension

November 30, 2024 by Dodger Blue

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed Tommy Edman to a five-year, $74 million contract extension that runs through the 2029 season. Edman’s new deal with the Dodgers also includes a team option for 2030.

The Dodgers acquired Edman from the St. Louis Cardinals prior to the 2024 trade deadline, and he became an important part of their team once he was able to come off the injured list.

Edman was dealing with a sprained left ankle and rehabbing from offseason right wrist surgery at the time of the trade, so he did not make his Dodgers or season debut until August.

As soon as he was activated, Edman brought versatility to the club, playing center field and shortstop, while providing an offensive boost from what the club was utilizing prior.

According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, Edman’s contract extension also includes a $17 million signing bonus and deferred salary:

BREAKING: Superutilityman Tommy Edman and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in agreement on a five-year, $74 million contract extension, sources tell ESPN. The deal runs from 2025-29 and includes a sixth-year club option. There’s a $17 million signing bonus and deferred money included.

Edman hit .237/.294/.417 with five doubles, six home runs and 20 RBI over 37 games with the Dodgers this past season, but made his biggest impact in the playoffs.

He slugged his way to earning National League Championship Series MVP honors by batting .409/.391/.500 with two doubles and seven RBI over six games against the New York Mets. Edman hit safely in every NLCS game.

Edman had long been coveted by the Dodgers front office, and they forced themselves into trade discussions with the Chicago White Sox and Cardinals to acquire him.

Tommy Edman career stats

Over his career, Edman has hit .263/.317/.408 with 126 doubles, 20 triples, 59 home runs, 363 runs scored, 242 RBI and 112 stolen bases to go along with a 99 wRC+ and 16 WAR in 633 games.

The 29-year-old has also seen time at second base, third base, shortstop, and all three outfield spots.

In 2025, Edman should continue to mix in at different positions, primarily shortstop and center field, providing the Dodgers with a contact-first bat and more versatility out of an everyday player.
