29-year-old RHP pitched in the Mexican League in 2024, and last pitched in the majors in 2021 with Colorado
The Dodgers have reportedly added another pitcher to their group of non-roster invitees at Camelback Ranch in spring training. Right-hander Julian Fernández, who last pitched in the majors in 2021, signed a minor league deal with the team, per Fabian Ardaya at The Athletic.
Fernández in 2024 pitched in the Mexican League, posting a 1.82 ERA in 34 relief appearances for Veracruz, with 43 strikeouts and 12 walks in 34⅔ innings.
He reached the majors in 2021, pitching six games with the Rockies, and allowed eight runs in 6⅔ innings with four walks and four strikeouts. Fernández pitched in Triple-A the next two years, first with the Rockies and then with the Blue Jays, putting up a combined 7.19 ERA with 70 strikeouts and 36 walks in 66⅓ innings. Toronto released Fernández in May 2023.
Fernández was originally signed as an amateur out of the Dominican Republic in 2012. He was selected by the Giants in the 2017 Rule 5 Draft, but had Tommy John surgery in April 2018 that cost him the next two seasons. The Marlins claimed him off waivers in November 2018, and Fernández spent the 2019 season on the injured list before getting returned to the Rockies at the end of the season.
Fernández turned 29 on December 5.
Among the reported non-roster invitees for the Dodgers in 2025 are infielder David Bote plus pitchers Giovanny Gallegos and Matt Sauer. Last year, seven of the 12 non-roster pitchers in spring training ended up pitching in the majors for the Dodgers during the season.
