Dodgers Sign Former Tigers Infielder to One-Year Deal

January 10, 2026 by Last Word On Baseball

It has been a busy day for the Los Angeles Dodgers. Just hours after claiming utility infielder Ryan Fitzgerald from the Minnesota Twins, they have inked infielder Andy Ibáñez to a one-year deal, according to reporter Francys Romero. Ibáñez was non-tendered by the Detroit Tigers shortly after last season. As the Dodgers 4o-man roster is full, a move is pending.

Report: Dodgers Sign Infielder Andy Ibáñez to One-Year Deal

Interesting Moves

Infield depth is not the immediate need that comes to mind when considering the Dodgers going into the 2026 season. A right-handed high-leverage reliever and a left-handed hitting corner outfielder seemed more urgent. They signed the closer of their choice. The corner outfielder is yet to be determined.

Pending physical.

However, it is clear when they inquired about free agent Bo Bichette that they are covering all the contingencies. It is now safe to say, with spring training weeks away, that Tommy Edman will not be ready, or at least slow-walked into the beginning of the year, as he recovers from ankle surgery. In addition, super-utility man Kiké Hernández, who is expected to sign with the Dodgers at some point, will not be ready either. Hernández is recovering from elbow surgery. Finally, World Series hero Miguel Rojas is not an everyday player.

The New Addition

For his part, Ibáñez will strengthen the Los Angeles defense in the diamond. The 32-year-old has spent time at second and third base. He is a right-handed batter and hits for a .258 average. He has been a major leaguer for five years. Ibáñez is out of options, so if the Dodgers are to keep him, they have to find a spot on the 40-man roster. Before his time with Detroit, Ibáñez was with the Texas Rangers.

Not Done Yet

The Dodgers’ roster seems crowded. As such, there should be no surprise if Los Angeles makes a trade or two before the end of February.
